We turn now to the last of our endangered motifs, the Smoking Skull. Once, vast herds of smoking skulls darkened the Great Plains. Ranging from Colorado in the west to Ohio in the east, from Alberta in the north, to Texas in the south, they lived in equilibrium with the Native American, and helped to fertilize the prairies. With the spread of firearms and the railroad, the smoking skulls were slaughtered in their tens of millions.
